About Denise Schumaker
As a classroom teacher, my responsibilities include building rapport with students from a wide range of cultural backgrounds, creating a trusting atmosphere through sensitivity to students' strengths, weaknesses, and personal learning styles. I engage students through humor and activities designed for maximum interaction in large and small groups. In addition, I have developed my own curriculum that is appropriate to students' learning abilities and reflects their needs and interests. I consistently receive excellent formal student evaluations, and I often have students personally come to thank me for creating a supportive, fun, and productive classroom environment.Outside of the classroom, I have participated in several committees to improve overall program quality at my places of employment. I have worked together with administration and other faculty to develop new curricula and assessment programs, as well as to improve upon existing ones. I have also participated in the development of new elective courses designed to help engage students in American culture and college campus life.In addition to my employment as a classroom instructor, I am also the current Coordinator for the CATESOL Orange County Chapter and have previously served the chapter as Graduate Student Representative and Secretary. This year, I am also serving as the Program Chair for the CATESOL Annual Conference, to be held December 6-9, 2018 in Anaheim, CA. These leadership and administration roles have provided me with valuable skills and experience that I would love to be able to apply to ESL program administration.Thanks for visiting my profile!
