“Every student can learn, just not on the same day or in the same way.” - George Evans. I believe that every child is unique, with different developmental needs. This quote serves as a reminder to me, in my role as an educator, that every child is unique and to recognise that they will learn and develop at their own pace. Hi, I am Denise, and I am currently a final-year student pursuing a diploma in Early Childhood Development and Education at Ngee Ann Polytechnic. I chose to embark on the path of being an educator for the opportunities to shape young lives. My goal is to provide the children under my care with a safe, nurturing, and inclusive environment where they can learn and have fun. Throughout my 3 years at Ngee Ann Polytechnic, I have been blessed with the opportunities of having yearly practicums and internship. I was able to gain the hands-on and realistic experience of being an early childhood educator. One of the most important skills I was able to hone was classroom management strategies which I think is crucial to have as an educator. Furthermore, I was able to apply the theories I learned in school to my real-life experiences. Additionally, outside of school work and practicums, I coach children in rock-climbing on the weekends. Coaching has enabled me to interact with children outside of the typical learning environment, and recognise that educators not only teach, but also help shape children as individuals through nurturing their resilience and persistence. I also work part-time as a Cafe service crew at Project Acai which has helped me to learn to work under pressure, hone my time management skills, and practice teamwork and communication skills. At Ngee Ann Polytechnic, I also had the opportunity to serve as the President of the Ngee Ann Rock-climbing Club, which helped me to further develop my leadership skills by working together with the rest of the committee to lead my fellow teammates. I learned and understood the importance of working as a team and being responsible when in a leadership position. With the opportunities that I have been given, such as my practicums, internship, and coaching, I believe that I have what it takes, and will continue to strive to become an educator that children will look up to, respect, and love.
