About Mujibi Denis

Geneticist with a PhD in Animal Science (Statistical Genomics) from the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada. Previously, I worked as a Biostatistician at Merial Igenity, (Georgia, USA) involved in the development of genomic tools for commercial application in the North American livestock industry; Scientist at the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), where I worked extensively with smallholder dairy farmers. My most recent projects sought to characterize the dairy industry in Eastern Africa with a view of identifying the most optimal dairy breeds for smallholder systems to maximize productivity. I have experience working with farmers in Eastern Africa (Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Ethiopia) and West Africa (Nigeria). I am passionate about enhancing uptake of best farming practices as well as appropriate technology transfer in developing world farming systems. Leveraging the phenomenal explosion of mobile telephony and associated infrastructure in Africa for delivery of innovative solutions to move farmers beyond subsistence through sustainable commercialization. At USOMI, we seek to address the poor adoption of agricultural technologies and farming best practices in Africa. Our goal is to increase access by smallholder and medium scale farmers to high quality inputs, high value markets and data-aided decision support.

Listed skills include Genetics, Molecular Biology, Genomics, Science, and 22 others.

USOMI Limited is a technical services provision company that seeks to address the poor adoption of agricultural technologies and farming best practices in Africa. Our goal is to increase access by commercially oriented farmers to high quality inputs, high value markets and data-aided decision support. We are particularly driven by the challenges that smallholder farmers in rural communities’ face with respect to the segmented nature of the value chains they operate in. Farmers cannot easily acquire inputs and services, are fleeced by well-connected middlemen who deny them direct access to high value markets, as well as the unpredictable supply of produce, most of which doesn’t meet market requirements in terms of quality and quantity. Additionally, there is widespread use of inappropriate germplasm, technologies and husbandry practices in relation to production environment resulting in poor yields. Many farmers do not have a ready market for their produce. This serves as a disincentive for farmers to invest their resources in inputs such as hybrid seeds and fertilizers. We attempt to solve these problems using out mobile phone platforms tools USOMI Lulu and USOMI Rubi. https://rubi.usomi.com/ | https://www.usomi.com/
