Co-Founder & CeoDealtrio - Daily Deals Startup 2010 - 2012ThailandWhen daily deals were all the rage, I co-founded one of Thailand’s first Groupon-like startups, marking my initial foray into the tech startup world. It was a crash course in the fundamentals: lean methodology, customer development, B2B sales, pitch deck creation, team building, and motivation. While we started with enthusiasm, the business faced challenges due to inaccuracies in our Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC) and virality assumptions. Nonetheless, it was an invaluable learning experience that set the foundation for future ventures.I initially built the website by modifying and reshaping a pre-made script I purchased—despite the challenge of it being entirely in Chinese! Later, to differentiate ourselves from the competition, I rebuilt the customer-facing side as a Facebook app called CouponVille. This version was developed using Ruby on Rails, a framework I was learning at the time. The concept took inspiration from Zynga’s game mechanics: users could easily claim a few coupons upfront, but unlocking more required actions like inviting friends or using Facebook credits.I also tackled the usual early-stage startup challenges: • Hired and worked alongside sales execs to pitch our deals, focusing on small merchants like restaurants, spas, hotels, and clinics. • Managed Facebook and Google AdWords campaigns, while setting up automated mailing lists to attract users. I also employed some creative viral marketing strategies, like offering “free” coupons and running sweepstakes. • Hustled at tech and business events, both locally and in Singapore, to meet investors and pitch our project. While we didn’t secure funding at the time, I built a strong network of contacts that later proved instrumental in successfully fundraising for my next venture, Hipflat. -
