Airbus A320-NH3 Variant with Onboard Thermal Catalytic Cracking of AmmoniaSponsored by TU Delft, externally supported by NASA Glenn Research Center, Safran Tech and Rotterdam The Hague Airport - Led the Propulsion and Aircraft Design departments- Created A320-NH3 propulsion module including thermal & plasma catalytic cracking of ammonia, heat exchange and control sub-module, ammonia hydrogen fuel blend combustor and NOx-reducing inter-stage turbine burner- Studied cracking and combustion characteristics of various fuel blends via Cantera and CHEMKINBy sacrificing performance capability to be able to carry at least 150 passengers at a design range of 4000 km, the overall operational emissions of the aircraft are reduced by more than 50% compared to the A320neo, meaning that the NOx, CO, unburnt hydrocarbon, soot, and water emissions combined are cut by half.
