At Hooper Detoxification Stabilization Center, I supervise and mentor acupuncture interns in their final year of medical studies at the National College of Natural Medicine and the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine. I also supervise acupuncture interns on an as needed basis at Old Town Clinic, Immune Enhancement Project, and various Oregon College of Oriental Medicine clinic sites.

Administered by Central City Concern, a non-profit organization in Portland, OR, Hooper Detoxification Stabilization Center provides medical detoxification and stabilization for people who have resolved to tackle their drug and/or alcohol addictions. Registered nurses, technicians, the Medical Director, and acupuncturists support patients as they spend four to ten days in this crucial first step in recovery. Patients receive around the clock care seven days a week from nurses and other professionals. Most people who arrive at Hooper experience considerable physical, emotional, and psychic pain. As an acupuncturist, I am able to help calm the body, soothe the mind, and refresh the spirit.

Administrated by Central City Concern, a nonprofit organization in Portland, Oregon, Old Town Clinic serves a diverse population: people experiencing homelessness, drug and/or alcohol addiction, mental health disturbances, and other challenging situations. Assisting people make the transition from an alienated lifestyle to a more engaged viewpoint forms the core of CCC’s approach. Housing, mentors who understand the process, meaningful daily activity, and physical and emotional health services are all key to a successful journey. Acupuncturists assist Western medical providers from MDs and Naturopaths to psychiatric nurses and pharmacists. My work as an acupuncturist in this multi-disciplinary environment provides me an opportunity to keep current with the latest multidisciplinary treatment techniques and strategies.

Modalities I use include acupuncture (insertive and non-insertive), electro-acupuncture, scalp acupuncture, cupping, gua sha, moxibustion, shiatsu, tui na, and herbal prescriptions. Since I base my diagnosis on pulse analysis, channel palpation, and other objective measures, I am able to treat a wide spectrum of mental, physical, and emotional imbalances. A division of the Institute of Traditional Medicine in Portland, OR, the Immune Enhancement Project is a medical specialty clinic which provides adjunctive therapy to support and enhance standard medical care that is received elsewhere. Disorders include cancer, multiple sclerosis, HIV/AIDS, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, hepatitis C, and pain syndromes. IEP offers low-cost medical services: acupuncture, shiatsu, moxibustion, herbal medicine, Naturopathic (ND) care, and nutritional services. Working at IEP has been deeply rewarding; the patients continually teach me new and more profound paths to healing and well-being.

Working out of the head office in Kobe, Japan, I wrote diversity training programs for Japanese and overseas employees of Kobe Steel Ltd, one of the major steel and manufacturing and construction companies in Japan. For multicultural groups in Japan, the US, Australia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Korea, I created and presented seminars and interactive simulations. I interfaced with senior management at Kobe Steel, US Steel, POSCO (Korea), and Baoshan Iron and Steel (China). For Japanese employees of KSL seeking advanced degrees in England, France, the Netherlands, and the US, I developed an MBA preparation program. As a technical writer, I proofread and edited technical documents for the steel sector as well as the machinery and engineering sectors.
