About Dennis Colling

Mr. Colling is a senior HR executive with 30+ years of experience building/leading the HR aspects of large complex health systems in academic and community settings. He has worked for three of the top ten hospitals in the country, significantly contributed to their growth, effectively managed union, non-union and mixed situations, and successfully directed bargaining strategy/union avoidance activities.Mr. Colling contributed a crucial strategic influence in the development of Partners HealthCare as one of the pre-eminent academic health systems in the world. As VP of HR, he established this function at the system level soon after Partners was formed. The central/divisional HR model he created minimized costs while providing excellent employee- and management-facing services; he reduced health care costs, maintained low turnover and high achievement by working with Boards on each level to design/implement executive compensation and performance management programs, and created programs to meet the unique needs of Partners’ physicians and scientists. Before, Mr. Colling served as Associate VP/CHRO for the U of Pennsylvania Medical System, and was part of a turnaround team that transformed Penn into one of the country’s most successful health systems. He contributed to the financial turnaround of the University’s Hospital by redesigning benefits programs that improved employee satisfaction and lowered costs, and played a major role in establishing the continuum of care from tertiary to non-acute care. He also bridged the gap between UPMS and the University at a critical time in the latter’s history by serving as the University’s interim VP of HR. Earlier, Mr. Colling served as CHRO/CIO for Catherine McAuley Health System and was a key player in its development from a hospital to a multi institution system.Previously, Mr. Colling worked for the US Veterans Administration, and served in the US Navy. He earned both his MBA and AB from the University of Michigan.
