I’m a Senior Water/Wastewater Treatment Consultant with more than 40 years of experience working in the power, semiconductor, mining and metals, and oil and chemicals industries. My project experience spans five continents and includes system design, operations and project support. I’ve designed and operated many types of systems throughout my career, including pretreatment, demineralization, wastewater treatment, and water conservation including zero liquid discharge. I’ve used this experience to support plant startups and troubleshoot issues in many areas of water and wastewater systems. I’ve also been involved in developing a HERO® (High Efficiency Reverse Osmosis) system that allowed one system to reduce its demand for makeup water by more than 40%. In my current role at Burns & McDonnell, I work with power plant and chemical plant clients on pretreatment, purification, wastewater treatment, flue gas desulfurization (FGD) wastewater, potable and domestic sewage treatment. I’m active in the water and wastewater treatment communities, having authored and/or co-authored more than 10 papers and/or presentations on a variety of topics including water conservation, flow accelerated corrosion, flue gas desulfurization, carbon capture and engineering design. I’ve also presented an introduction to water treatment course at the annual International Water Conference (IWC) for seven years. My experience gives me a unique ability to assess plants and situations from a number of perspectives, and enables me to come up with innovative, cost-effective solutions that meet each client’s specific project goals. If you’d like to learn more about how the Burns & McDonnell team can help you, send me a message and I’d be happy to connect.Specialties:Water & Wastewater Treatment Power Plant DesignCommissioningStartupDemineralizationReverse Osmosis (RO)FGD Purge Water TreatmentWater PretreatmentWater PurificationWater ConservationMetallurgy

Sr. Facilities EngineerIntel Nov 1994 - May 2002Santa Clara, California, UsAs a senior facilities engineer, I was responsible for water conservation programs worldwide and later all water-related programs at a Massachusetts project site. I designed multiple water treatment systems and performed development work for the HERO (High Efficiency Reverse Osmosis) System. -
Account ManagerCalgon Corp. 1992 - 1994As an account manager at Calgon, I worked closely with power plants, chemical plants and oil refineries to determine their water treatment chemical needs. A significant achievement was identifying a new corrosion mechanism in 90/10 copper nickel material as well as saving a client <$1MM by recommending a different tube metallurgy for their condenser.
-
Sr. Metallurgical EngineerFina Oil And Chemical 1990 - 1992As Fina’s first metallurgical engineer, I was responsible for corrosion control, material selection, failure analysis, cathodic protection and water treatment. I also substituted for the maintenance supervisor and turnaround supervisor as needed. One of my major accomplishments included re-evaluating an apparent corrosion issue in a distillation column, which was found to be less significant than originally reported and saved the facility >$1MM by not having to replace the column. I was also responsible for the site water treatment programs as well as acting maintenance supervisor and turnaround supervisor as needed.

District RepresentativeBetz 1984 - 1990CzI was responsible for the management and application of water treatment chemical programs for several industrial clients including refineries, chemical plants, metals plants and rock quarries. One major accomplishment was prevention of wastewater violations at a particular refinery, which had been a frequent issue under a previous chemical program, after assumption of the system responsibilities helping the client avoid significant fines and potential other legal and public relations issues. -
Project EngineerExxon 1982 - 1984UsAs a project engineer at Exxon, I worked as a corrosion engineer in oil field production. I was responsible for chemical programs and developed a critical piping inspection program. One of major accomplishments was managing a critical piping inspection program that located and repaired a cooling water line which would have required an entire oil field to be shutdown had the line failed in service. Replacement of the cooling water line required a creative means to bypass the failing section of line to allow for the field to continue to operate during the repair.
