I'm a psychologist who has made the shift from direct clinical work to research, consulting and policy development. I want to use my life experience as a social worker, a psychologist and behavioral health consultant in collaboration with others to create resources for personal growth as well as building a flourishing global culture and a healthy living planet.I’ve worked many years in the field of mental health, first as a social worker and later as a psychologist. Over time in these work situations it becomes easy to harbor many shifting and sometimes contradictory ideas about how people are formed in a culture and a how culture is shaped by people. In recent years my focus has been more on what it takes to grow mentally, physically and spiritually healthy people. Currently I am advocating for a wider understanding of the lifelong health impacts of adverse childhood experiences (abuse, abandonment, parental mental illness and substance addiction, witnessing spousal abuse….) and their prevention and remediation at any stage of life.Adverse childhood experience is a hidden epidemic although little known widely,it is well documented by US Center for Disease Control and Kaiser Permanente Preventive Health, San Diego. Commonly the misery of trauma results in dysfunctional behaviors that are self soothing, but create lifelong health problems and contribute to the cost of health care. When you add in all the indirect costs (loss of work productivity, homelessness, impoverishment, the criminal justice industry) the enormity of the cost is incalculable. Overall, my aim is to work with those interested in evolving a healthy global culture, which to me would imply GDP (Gross Domestic Product) is replaced by NDW (Net Domestic We/lbeing) or even better Net Global Wellbeing.
