Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Assess each call situation to determine best course of action and appropriate protocol.Utilize medical equipment and procedures including defibrillator, EKG monitor, oxygen and suction devices, intravenous fluids, CPR and other procedures and medications as required to provide advanced medical care.Develop and utilize triage skills to provide optimal efficiency during calls.Provide patient care according to clinical protocols and safety requirements.Lift and move patients as required to provide optimum care.Communicate with receiving facility to receive medical direction and to provide critical information. Perform firefighting activities including driving fire apparatus, operating pumps and related equipment, laying hose, and performing fire combat, containment and extinguishment tasks. Respond to emergency calls and alarms. Operate radio and other communication equipment. Participate in the inspection of buildings, and other structures in fire prevention programs. Present programs to the community on safety, medical, and fire prevention topics. Performs duties as a certified EMT-P, according to criteria and standards set forth by the state. A paramedic functions as the most extensively trained primary care provider in the pre-hospital setting. The paramedic is responsible for all aspects of care provided to the sick and injured. The paramedic provides both basic and advanced life support, including comprehensive patient assessment, invasive airway management, cardiac monitoring and administration of medications. The paramedic is frequently in a leadership role working with a small team of lesser-trained prehospital care providers. The paramedic is responsible for verbal communication with the patient, other prehospital providers and hospital personnel, including physician medical directors. The paramedic completes extensive written documentation on patient condition and treatment provided, and must understand all applicable legal, moral and ethical issues surrounding emergency operations.The paramedic must have excellent judgment, be able to prioritize decisions and act quickly in the best interest of the patient. The paramedic must be able to function independently, remain calm, and adapt to an environment that is constantly changing. The paramedic must possess communication skills and be capable of adapting to situations with violence and emotional instability in multicultural settings. The paramedic must possess critical reasoning and math skills and be capable of applying them effectively in stressful situations. Self motivation is essential.
