About Dennis Tonsor
Dennis grew up in Monroe City, Missouri, a small town 20 miles west of Hannibal, Missouri. This is the area where famed Mark Twain grew up and lived those childhood stories he wrote about. Dennis lived some of those stories too with numerous outdoor adventures. His family raised hogs, cattle and grew a variety of row crops on the family farm. He continued to keep his hands dirty mowing dozens of lawns and helping his uncle in the summers with his construction company. By working and playing hard throughout his schooling he was led to Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas (the little apple). It was there that he met some fellow alumni landscape architects and planners from RVi and was intrigued about spending some time in Austin learning from and working with them. After his internship, he finished his degree and immediately moved back to Austin to embark on what is now a 18+ year career. His love of land planning stems from a background of life outdoors and solving problems including jig-saw puzzles (you gotta do something indoors during those long, cold winters). He loves being given a challenge and working through it with his clients and team members and creating lasting relationships along the way. If they’re up for some hunting, fishing or fireside chats, that’s even better! Ultimately, he wants to create wonderful communities where people and their families live each day and enjoy the parks, trails, schools and shopping opportunities that great design creates. You’ll usually find him sketching away on trace paper creating multiple design concepts to discuss or out in the field exploring the next site. He pulls from his personal experiences for his projects; from an RV trip to Jellystone in Kerrville, TX, to a visit to Stapleton in Colorado, a family vacation in Grand Lake and the Rockies and even to the excellent design of the community center near his house, it all builds amazing layers of depth to his thought and designs.

I’ve been very fortunate to experience all phases of planning complex large-scaled communities. From initial feasibility studies, conceptual master planning, entitlements and further coordination with regulatory bodies, to the continued refinements of the plan. I love being a meaningful contribution across many markets. Specifically, I have worked closely with our Tempe office on several projects in Arizona, Nevada and Colorado. I love the cross-collaboration between our offices. My work has included numerous projects in Texas and the Southwest including these notable favorites: Headwaters – a beautiful new community in Dripping Springs, TX in collaboration with Freehold Communities. My favorite aspect of this development is the vast open spaces that preserve the ranch heritage for 1,000 households owning their own piece of the hill country just 20 minutes from downtown Austin.Orchard Ridge – a community with a fresh, new style in Liberty Hill, TX delivered by Freehold Communities. This development embodies a great team vision and client dedication to community character throughout the residential design guidelines to the community gardens.Victory @Verrado – the small-town charm in the community nestled against the White Tank Mountains, in Buckeye, Arizona working with DMB. One of the biggest design challenges within the Victory District was to meaningfully integrate 3 distinct circulation networks (vehicular, path & trail and golf) while also trying to manage development costs.Coyote Springs – a community in a magnificent valley surrounded by majestic mountains and peaks on all four sides in Nevada. They call it “Nature’s Cradle” with its vast scale of 43,000 acres. This is a unique project for me, as I initially worked on it as an intern and today day serve as the planning lead. Trinity Falls – a successful performing community in McKinney, Texas. Encore at Eastmark – the award winning active adult community in Mesa, Arizona.
