I recently purchased a 440 page book online that was in both ePub and PDF formats. For structural reasons the ePub was almost impossible to read on an iPad. Both formats were poorly designed and lacked rudimentary navigation. As a proof of concept I extracted the text and graphics from the PDF and restructured the book in InDesign for readability and content presentation specifically for an iPad including hyperlinked contents, bookmarks, index, and a simple link from any page to the contents page. This is the kind of project that interests me.For the last twenty years of my career I have worked for advertising and marketing agencies as a Photoshop image retoucher and Production Artist on ad campaigns, catalogs, packaging, and OOH. But my real love is the printed book. A lot of that has to do with the fact that I was a printer and typesetter for the first part of my career and have never gotten the feel of the printing press, darkrooms, film emulsions, and ink on paper out of my system. A digital book should reflect that same care for structure and readability. I think that shows in my InDesign long documents.I now live in rural West Sonoma County and have no desire to commute to the city every day. Some might call that retirement, but living on 5 acres with wildlife, a garden, chickens and sheep is not a life of leisure. Even so, I have all the tools necessary to work from home and can always make room for another digital project.
