Profile bio

About Dennis Elbers

I'm fascinated by the impact of visual culture on our life. My work aims to show that unobtrusive (graphic) design is actually extraordinary. The designers I work with not only make you look, but you will see.Starting up and organizing creative concepts related to visual culture (graphic design, digital arts and muralism) is what I love most. As I like to present art in public this often coincides with rediscovering urban areas. In this proces I deal with finance, communication and curation. I'm not afraid to join forces with like minded entrepreneurs in order to succeed. These concepts explore the impact of visual culture on society by bringing together creators and audience in experiences and dialogues. Since 2006 I've worked on a great variety of commissions and self initiated projects. Always in intense collaboration with young designers and artists. Since 2012 I occasionally write about my observations, which have been published in design media like 360°, Dee magazine, Etapes:, Dude and gestalten.tv. Furthermore I enjoy the dissemination of these observations in talks and debates. It is rewarding to share my expierence and knowledge by advising both funds and bottom-up organizations. In 2010 I received the Rabobank culture award for my contributions to the cultural climate in Breda.

Listed skills include Graphic Design, Curating, Art, Concept Development, and 22 others.

Director (Founder)

Current

Breda

Graphic Matters presents the work of visually wayward, societally involved and/or socially critical designers. Our program (exhibitions, workshops, open calls, education) incites professionals and youth to take a critical look at visual culture. With presentations in a specific (public) context we create room for dialogue. Additionally, we offer them a chance to discover and develop their knowledge and skills. By making designers and youth aware of the power and impact of design, we contribute to the quality of contemporary visual communication. Properly (learning how to) view and visualise is just as important als reading and writing. By stimulating visual literacy, we promote connection, independence and equality in society. As a director I am responsible for the artistic, financial and corporate policy. I manage a team of 12 professionals, freelancers and interns.
