CurrentXiretsa is a startup company with the goal of commercializing a new class of antibiotics based on anti-infective conjugated electrolytes (ACEs). ACEs comprise a new class of broad-spectrum antibiotics that target G+ and G- bacteria and multi-species biofilms included in the WHO & CDC Priority Pathogens’ List. Differentiating features of ACEs include: (a) a molecular scaffold platform that enables rapid synthesis, product scaleup and the generation of derivatives for specific indications, (b) their properties can be tuned to balance efficacy and safety (our team has generated several hit compounds up to date), (c) membrane targeting activity that offers superiority over classical antimicrobials for treating slow-growing, dormant, and persistent infections, (d) a lower level of resistance relative to conventional antibiotics. Xiretsa’s technology has been developed through funding at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), the Singapore Center for Environmental Life Sciences Engineering (SCELSE), and the National University of Singapore (NUS). These efforts have led to understanding the molecular features that dominate MIC, cytotoxicity, and in vivo toxicity.
