Our work with leading international business schools shows that mainstream generative AI tools effectively increase productivity and assist at a high level. However, issues arise when students try to incorporate these tools as a shortcut to answering their school assignments and conducting research. Based on experiments with business schools, we have built PUMA, a modular RAG setup grounded in data context relevant to business school use cases. It's a modular pipeline of individual processing units and search engines that returns, optimises, and generates answers. PUMA offers a domain-specific generative AI designed to guide students and faculty staff through a research approach, unlike the classic behaviour of, for instance, Chat-GPT, whose general purpose design seeks to answer questions immediately and consequently disregards the analytical process of reaching a justifiable answer. This is not an acceptable use case for business schools where the entire educational concept resides in understanding the method for arriving at an answer. PUMA helps students undertake research assignments and projects, and it allows faculty to experiment with the use of generative AI in the classroom. This is a crucial step for business schools, as it helps solve the problems introduced by general-purpose generative AI in the business school context.
