Currently Director and Manager of the Discovery Pharmaceutics and Preformulation group within the Genentech Research and Early Development organization. This is an innovative new interdisciplinary group that aids in improving drug candidates from discovery through development with a focus on understanding the physicochemical properties and the formulation and drug delivery of preclinical drug molecules. Our group interfaces with groups in Drug Discovery such as medicinal chemistry, biology, pharmacology, drug metabolism/pharmacokinetics, process research, solid state and materials science, and formulation development. Some activities include:* Research and development of new formulation technologies to improve the drug delivery of novel modalities including small molecules, peptides, degraders, and oligonucleotides* Formulation optimization and drug delivery of these modalities for preclinical efficacy and toxicology studies, including a focus on drug nanoparticle and amorphous dispersion delivery methods * Preformulation of drug candidates, including physicochemical characterization, stability, and form and phase identification using a variety of analytical techniques to support early molecular developability assessment* Application of informatics, analytics, and biopharmaceutical absorption modeling and simulation to support compound and formulation optimization* Understanding of drug metabolism and pharmacokineticsIn addition, I also have an extensive background experience in chemistry, with a focus on organometallic catalyst design and supramolecular chemistry, with the application of physical organic chemistry and reaction kinetics towards the understanding of mechanistic questions.* Supramolecular complexation interactions* Air sensitive chemical synthesis and characterization* Solid state materials and polymer preparation and characterization* Kinetic and mechanistic investigations* Physical organic chemistry
