Profile bio

About Dennis Coyle

I consider myself fortunate to have started in journalism when print newspapers were at the top of the media food chain and then watched firsthand the birth of community journalism, which paved the way for digital publishing and the never-ending need for specialized, 24-7 digital content. The demand has never been greater. It’s truly exciting, and I’m glad to be a part of this wild ride. I have 13 post-graduate years of experience (19 years if I go back to my first gig as a sports clerk/writer), focusing primarily on trade publications for nonprofit organizations. Developing print and digital content that engages readers and meets the needs of my clients is my specialty. From a larger perspective, I also have vast publishing experience, ranging from financial management, revenue generation and editorial- and content-specific strategies. At the organizational level, I enjoy enabling personal and professional development of my teams and other colleagues. I am driven by seeking the best…producing the best content, developing the best strategies, enabling the best of those around me.In order to meet my personal and professional goals, I lean on my ability to effectively communicate. Regardless if it is spoken or written communication, I am able to connect with my clients, board members, subject matter experts, vendors, advertisers and my peers. I strive to create meaningful and lasting relationships. Trust, dedication and respect are the cornerstones of such relationships and I embody those innate traits.

Listed skills include Publishing, Social Media Marketing, Editorial Consulting, Content Writing, and 23 others.

Senior Manager

Chicago, Il

As a senior manager at SmithBucklin, the world’s largest association management and professional services company, I managed a variety of client, unit and corporate responsibilities. While directly managing seven client publications, I grew the Editorial & Publishing Services unit to a record number of 45 clients and 55+ publications/projects, which annually generated more than $1 million in labor revenue. I led a team of six editors, providing on-going coaching to meet development goals and performance-based metrics; identified and engaged freelance writers/editors and other third-party providers. I developed and managed client, unit and corporate budgets, including labor, print, postage, design and third-party providers; and provided accurate forecasts and effectively managed expenses. Specific to publishing, I cultivated new business development by identifying custom strategies to solve prospects’ publishing- and content-related challenges and led new client/project onboarding and transitions (3-6 per year) by quickly and efficiently establishing staffing support based on the clients’ short-term and long-term needs. I also drove content development, distribution, social media, and advertising strategies and best practices across the unit and individual clients. In regards to my clients during the last 18 months, I was responsible for more than 12 publications spanning healthcare, technology, and business and trade industries with 82,000+ total circulation and $600,000 combined ad revenue. I am also a graduate of SmithBucklin’s Leadership Learning Forum, an intensive 12-month program that each year stimulates and inspires the individual learning, self-discovery and personal growth of 15 to 20 employees by exposing them to leadership concepts and principles. Created by SmithBucklin CEO Henry Givray, who is also the program’s lead facilitator, its overarching goal is to build leadership capacity throughout the company – to grow leaders from within.

Aug 2012 - May 2016

Manager, Senior Coordinator, Coordinator

Chicago, Il

During my first six years at SmithBucklin, I managed and enhanced 18+ publications, ranging from weekly e-newsletters to monthly print magazines, resulting in 3 promotions. In order to be successfully in my role, I effectively collaborated with board members, editorial advisory committee members, sales teams and other service units. I regularly developed content, including writing profiles and in-depth, technical articles; edited copy using AP Style and other traditional and client-specific style guides to ensure accuracy. One of my more significant experiences was establishing strategies and outbound messaging for converting print publications to digital formats to enable organizations to better manage expenses during the economic recession and not sacrifice the value they provided their memberships.

Jan 2006 - Aug 2012

Founder

Chicago, Il

I combined my entrepreneurial spirit with my passion for volleyball and created a sports network that attracted more than 1,000 volleyball players from the Chicagoland area. I applied what I had ascertained from working in association management to create a centralized resource for volleyball players to participate in open gyms and tournaments as well as network in social settings away from the indoor and beach courts. At its peak, I hosted two large-scale tournaments (120+ players) and approximately 50 open gyms per year. Not only did I network with other volleyball players, I built business relationships with the Chicago Events Division, Chicago Parks District and various athletic facilities. I coordinated with a designer to create marketing collateral, sales sheets, a website with a robust database and online community component. I also cultivated relationships with sponsors, which contributed to the organization’s $35,000 annual revenue. At its core, the volleyball network was an association with a well-known brand supported by membership, events, online community, marketing and event/sponsorship revenues.

Mar 2008 - May 2014

Associate Editor

Des Plaines, Il

At Inland, a national newspaper association specializing in financial and human resources research, technical training, advertising sales seminars, and revenue generation, I was a part of a two-editor machine that produced The Inlander. The twice-monthly publication (4,000 circulation) was widely considered one of the two top print publications for the newspaper industry. I enthusiastically spent my days developing content, interviewing the industry’s leading subject matter experts and writing as many as two to four articles per week. A related perk of working at Inland was that I often wrote about the organization’s renowned training seminars. In doing so, I attended countless sessions about improving writing skills and storytelling, advertising sales, circulation, management and leadership. The education certainly served me well in my future endeavors, helping me manage tactical situations and seamlessly transition to management and leadership roles.

May 2003 - Jan 2006

Editor In Chief

Macomb, Il

Nothing quite compares to working at a student-run college newspaper. The lessons I learned at the Western Courier (tri-weekly, 6,500-circulation) were real and impactful to my career. To be clear, it was not a fluff gig. The Western Illinois University administration had zero oversight with the exception of assigning a journalism professor as a mentor and adviser. As Editor in Chief, I was legally responsible for the newspaper operations and liable for all printed material. I oversaw all sections and departments, including more than 100 employees and contracted freelancers. I established and maintain working relationships with professional and student organizations as well as community and other volunteer groups. During the four years I was enrolled at Western Illinois University and working at the Western Courier, I held various titles including Editor in Chief, Editor, Assistant Editor in Chief, News Editor and Assistant Sports Editor.
