  • Kennametal
Sr. Product Engineer, Wear Solutions Group (Engineering Manager)
    Kennametal Nov 2011 - Present
    Rogers, Arkansas
Promoted to manage the product engineering team for the entire Rogers, Arkansas facility including tungsten carbide products for mining and exploration in the oil and gas industry.Responsible for design and quotation of all new or revised products along with necessary tooling design.Assumed role of selecting the best manufacturing location for new part inquiries.Coordinated the consolidation of product engineering of two closed manufacturing plants into the Rogers, Arkansas facility.Executed the company's strategy to outsource engineering tasks to our India team as the workforce on site was reduced during economic downturn.Procured Ansys and utilized my team's strength to support FEA and CFD needs at the facility and expanded our support to the company at large.Led project teams to develop technologies that resulted in three patent applications.Led the project team through stage/gate process to support Halliburton AICD project, and our successful development work led to Kennametal being single sourced for this product line (eliminated 2 other competitors) and generated $1M annually in new sales.Led the project team to develop the Truetherm feature for pelletizing dies, which combined to improve safety and performance for our customers and generated $200K in additional revenue annually. The patent for this was awarded in 2015.Led the project team to improve brazing reliability by reducing average voids in the joint from 11% to 0% and improving minimum shear strength by over 400%.In 2017 both sales/applications engineers for the pelletizing die product line left the company, and I filled the void for one full calendar year bringing in $8M in sales without relinquishing any of my Engineering Manager responsibilities. There was no reward for this effort; I did it because I was too passionate about the customers, the product, and the people who make it to let it die.

This includes inspection for damage and wear, assessing the root cause and providing technical assistance to the customers, coordinating any failure analysis, determining work scope, estimating the cost and price, and coordinating with customers with a proposal and quotation.Composed and submitted formal bid packages for new dies (a large capitol expense item), which accounted for $4,000,000 in sales annually.Applied techniques learned from the Value and Pricing Seminar to recover losses in gross margins from when the cost of raw materials increased by 35%.Guided the implementation and fine-tuning of SAP in the die plates department with regards to material masters, bills of material, routers, and cost estimates.
