I started working when I was 11 at a Dairy farm, I learned to be diligent and to work hard. I woke up at 4 every Sunday morning to milk cows for five years. After graduating high school I had the chance to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. For two years I lived in the Philippines and developed many important skills. I learned to self-supervise, how to manage groups of people, and how to network. As a missionary it was up to me to do what I thought was best to serve the people in the area I was living. While serving in leadership positions in my mission I managed groups of 6 to 22 missionaries, I was in charge of monitoring their performance and instructing them on how to perform to the highest level. Every day I would walk the streets and meet new people, these connections came through walking up to new people and introducing myself or approaching people at their homes. I learned how to establish a network by making personal connections and using social skills. I was glad to serve those people, they taught me much about their culture and language. Now I speak Tagalog and I have intercultural competence. I not only appreciate my culture and that of the Filipinos but I can appreciate learning about anyone else's culture as well.
