Stuttgart is a valley surrounded by mountains from three sides which causes poor ventilation or fresh air and hinders dispersion and dilution of pollutants. The vehicular stress in Stuttgart is very high. Roads like B14 has 100,000 vehicles flow everyday. These leads high emissions of PM from the abrasion of brakes and tires. Apart from this city of Stuttgart does not have any ring road which causes all the traffic to pass unnecessarily through the city core. A ring road could have diverged most of the city traffic outside the city core helping to reduce pollution to some extend. Human settlement in most part of the Stuttgart is highly dense and has narrow canyons. This caused poor ventilation which leads to poor dispersion and dilution.This problem of air pollution is even more escalated during winter due to inversion conditions where a warm layer of atmospheric air is over cold air. In this situation the lower troposphere is very stable restricting the vertical convective movement of pollutant and concentrate in small volume of lower atmospheric air which leads to increase in concentration of pollutants.The objective of this study is to investigate the establishment of inversion layer in the lower troposphere during the winter season, dynamics of this layer during the daily cycle and its impacts on the concentration of pollutants by the application of tethered balloon sounding systems.
