I worked at Edwards Lifesciences as a temporary Label Designer for the UDI specific project. In this position, I work with specialized teams/cells to update and standardize the content, layout, and format of existing medical device labeling components to get them compliant for the FDA. FDA is establishing a unique device identification system to adequately identify medical devices through their distribution and use. When fully implemented, the label of most devices will include a unique device identifier (UDI) in human- and machine-readable form. Device labelers must also submit certain information about each device to FDA’s Global Unique Device Identification Database (GUDID). I am working within the Critical Care business unit, doing a number of tasks, to ensure these labels are able to meet these specifications.

This was a temporary role to support the R&D Surgical Engineers to achieve the UDI (unique device identifier) project goals and timelines, bringing Alcon products into alignment with newly defined FDA regulations.Responsibilities included, but were not limited to, the design and modification of artwork related to Alcon products affected by the UDI regulations. This effort entailed defining space constraints, and the positioning of new and existing icons and barcoding information while maintaining readability of all labeling. I also provided essential product development support by incorporating UDI knowledge into new labeling designs and technical file documentation that conformed to Alcon standards and Global Drafting Manual requirements.I worked in a team centered environment with a combination of lead and subordinate responsibilities. This position required excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to interface with various department representatives including off-site affiliates to collect and assemble materials and data needed to meet those UDI requirements.
