Developed employer’s inaugural Risk Appetite Statement, Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) Framework and other core ERM policies. Wrote these governance documents and shepherded them through broad consultations with colleagues then gained approval of executive management and the Board of Directors.Oversaw development and implementation of ERM policies, guidelines and procedures across the organization (written by authors other than myself). Ensured that these meshed (on paper and in practice) with the overall aims of the ERM program and the principles / requirements laid out in the core documents (noted above). Tasks required delivery of technical education, mentoring and editing.

Conducted inter-disciplinary research on topics related to international business. Concentrations: competitiveness of nations, foreign direct investment and environmental politics.Developed corporate-level strategy recommendations for the consideration and approval of EDC’s executive based on the results of above research.

Conducted transaction-specific political risk analyses in respect of EDC’s structured finance transactions in Latin America (1999), East Asia (2000-2006) and the Middle East (2007). In addition to examining broad political and social dynamics, this work entailed detailed review, and critique of various administrative matters in multiple jurisdictions. These included investment law, foreign exchange practices, sector-specific regulation, dispute resolution, financial structuring and the terms and conditions of investors’ contracts and community commitments. Along with colleagues, developed EDC’s proprietary political risk assessment methodology (1999). Led a complete review, update and re-launch of methodology in 2006. Methodology was recognized as a major ”contribution to advancing the tradecraft of the Canadian intelligence community” by the Canadian Association of Professional Intelligence Analysts and is the subject of an article Risk Management: An International Journal (Vol 12, Issue 2 (2010)). Mentored colleagues analysts in analytical, writing and presentation skills.

Assessed political and commercial risks associated with clients’investments in developing countries, particularly China and Cuba.Sructured, negotiated, priced and administered political risk insurance policies in support of investments and limited-recourse loans.
