Derek Bauman recently retired after a 26 career as a Police Officer. During his career he served as a Firearms Instructor, Field Training Officer, Supervisor, and Interim Chief of Police. Among many awards and commendations from leaders, peers, and the public, Derek was awarded the Medal of Valor for injuries sustained during a felony arrest with those injuries bringing his career to a premature close. Derek graduated from the University of Akron with an bachelors degree in Business Administration and later earned master degrees in Education and Business Administration.A long-time volunteer and friend of the community in Cincinnati’s West End neighborhood, Derek led the effort to save the West End Reds youth baseball organization when it was in danger of folding, raising over $25,000 to firmly secure the future of baseball in Cincinnati’s core. The league has since added teams including girls softball and now serves more than 100 young people. Derek also led the fundraising effort for slain Cincinnati Police Officer Sonny Kim, that ultimately raised over $207,000 for his family.Derek currently serves on the board and was previously Vice-Chair of All-Aboard Ohio, a 501c3 advocacy organization supporting public transportation across Ohio, worked diligently to pass Issue 7, the first countywide transit levy in the history of Hamilton County which will also provide key finance for the long overdue Western Hills Viaduct project, and is the Founder of #VisionZeroCincy, the initiative now adopted by the city of Cincinnati and Cincinnati Public Schools, to end the pandemic of traffic crash violence particularly for people walking and on bikes. Derek is also a lifetime member of the National Action Network and NAACP, where in 2016 he introduced a Resolution to the Cincinnati Branch calling Public Transit a Civil Right. This resolution was adopted by the full NAACP at their 2016 annual conference held in Cincinnati and is now the official policy of the organization. In 2018 Derek was elected to the Cincinnati branch Executive Committee, by all accounts becoming the first white police officer in the 115+ year history of the organization to be elected to such a role and he holds the trust shown in him by the community in the highest regard.
