As a co-op student at a steel mini-mill, was given the responsibilities of a junior engineer. Moreover, the primary tasks dealt with the quality and continued improvement of steel billets in the continuous casting process. Specific tasks included: - Monitoring and testing the quality of 140 mm billets cast and compare them to the 130 mm baseline- Investigating rhomboidity issues by investigating several key casting parameters and sources of rhomboidity- Monitoring mold quality and mold life: implementing a tube reforming program.

As a co-op student, the tasks performed at the lead smelter in Belledune included: - Performing mass balances in the refinery to determine potential material losses and plant efficiencies. - Performing small scale crucible reaction tests to determine the matte/slag ratio under different operating conditions. - Monitoring of new feeds and processes to determine the feasibility of using the feeds in future plant operations. - Performing heat probe analyses of the copper furnace and the silver bottom-blown oxygen cupel (BBOC) to determine the deterioration of brick liners to see if refitting was required at the next shutdown. - Performing leaching tests to determine potential environmental hazards in the tailings ponds.
