Provide for public safety by maintaining order, responding to emergencies, protecting people and property, enforcing motor vehicle and criminal laws, and promoting good community relations. Identify, pursue, and arrest suspects and perpetrators of criminal acts. Record facts to prepare reports that document incidents and activities. Review facts of incidents to determine if criminal act or statute violations were involved. Testify in court to present evidence or act as a witness in traffic and criminal cases. Patrol specific area on foot, or motorized conveyance, responding promptly to calls for assistance. Monitor, note, report, and investigate suspicious persons and situations, safety hazards, and unusual or illegal activity in patrol area. Investigate traffic accidents and other accidents to determine causes and to determine if a crime has been committed.

Monitor conduct of prisoners, according to established policies, regulations, and procedures, in order to prevent escape or violence. Inspect conditions of locks, window bars, grills, doors, and gates at a detention facility, in order to ensure that they will prevent escapes. Use weapons, handcuffs, and physical force to maintain discipline and order among prisoners. Search prisoners and cells for weapons, valuables, or drugs. Record information, such as prisoner identification, charges, and incidences of inmate disturbance. Serve meals and distribute commissary items to prisoners. Settle disputes between inmates. Arrange daily schedules for prisoners including work assignments, family visits, and counseling appointments. Train new officers to perform the above listed functions.
