In my planning role, I have been involved in many long and short-term projects that contribute to the economic and residential growth that is seemingly endless in Fernie. I work with a community made up of members of the public, consultants and developers on projects from the high-end, such as writing bylaws, the establishment of zones and subdivision approvals down to the finer details like the form and character of buildings. I have worked on plans to further strengthen Fernie’s bustling downtown core, including writing the Historic Downtown Patio Policy and negotiating Heritage Revitalization Agreements to ensure that Fernie’s rich history remains intact. I am heavily involved in the current and long-range planning surrounding Fernie’s residential growth. Much of this development is in new neighbourhoods, however a large component of my work is on infill development, assuring sustainability through the utilization of mixed uses and existing city infrastructure. I believe that a healthy balance between these two types of residential development is vital in the sustainable growth of a community.In addition to my planning experience, I find it a great asset to be able to lean on my previous knowledge gained as an engineering technologist. My Geographic Information Systems, asset management and subdivision and development servicing experiences are something I refer to almost every day in my role as planner. This experience also helps me to gain a better understanding of planning and development issues and effectively communicate effectively within my own department, with other departments and with faces outside of the organization.Working for a small organization has given me the opportunity to develop my managerial skillset. As opposed to a larger organization, where I might only work on a few tasks, in Fernie I am able to manage my own files from beginning to end, relying on both my individual work and the work of those on my team to see a project through to final approval. I have also been very fortunate to work under the mentorship of an outstanding manager here in Fernie, who has readied me for a more impactful managerial role.
