I left school in 1979 with a good education and was immediately employed as a trainee Quantity Surveyor with a company affiliated to the CJB group.Following redundancy I joined the RAF in February 1983 as a Telecommunications Operator. I served for an enjoyable 24 years, reaching the rank of Sergeant. My postings included RAF Wittering, MHQ Pitreavie Castle, RAF Gibraltar, 1SU Rudloe Manor, 81SU Bampton Castle, SHAPE HQ Belgium and TCW Brize Norton. I have also been deployed to The Falklands in 1985 and Gulf War 2 to Iraq (twice) and Qatar.I left the RAF in 2006 and after a brief period of driving for agencies I started employment with CPI Mortars in Castleford as a powder tanker and silo placement driver. I noticed potential for smoother running of the operation and assisted in the plant office while still driving. I eventually took on the role of Assistant Plant Supervisor full-time. After 1 year I was promoted to Plant Manager when the previous one retired. I performed that role for nearly 7 years before giving my notice so I could return to driving for a better work/life balance. I still maintained my skills as an HGV Driver while performing the office jobs, often being called upon to drive to cover sickness and during the initial COVID lockdown.Since leaving CPI I have worked as an HGV driver for B&Q home delivery (via agency), Forge Recycling commercial waste, Aggs R Us home deliveries of palletised products and CEVA (via agency)
