About Derek Corbett, Ph.D.

I am a motivated, highly active, and enthusiastic person in all environments. I get pleasure out of discovery and learning, and love to solve problems. I am driven to contribute to human progress towards greener and more sustainable means of meeting our growing energy and material needs.Since September 2019 I have been a part of the team at Enviva Biomass as a 'Wood Science Process Engineer.' My main roles at Enviva involve identifying and leveraging opportunities related to wood science (and lignocellulosic biomass raw material in general) for improving pellet quality, production, and overall safety. I work right at the intersection of science and engineering to provide value to my company and my team.I started as a Ph.D. student at NC State (Forest Biomaterials) in the summer of 2016 after earning B.S. and M.S. (Bioprocess Engineering) degrees from the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF) in Syracuse, NY. I was co-advised by Drs. Sunkyu Park and Richard Venditti. While I have a chemical engineering background, my research interests encompassed both the science and technology associated with lignocellulosic fractionation and the subsequent isolation, characterization, and utilization of wood-derived compounds including lignin, cellulose, hemicelluloses, and extractives. My dissertation involved investigation of a process for xylooligomer isolation from hardwood autohydrolyzate liquor and understanding mechanical refining as a pretreatment for enzymatic sugar production.Outside of my curricular activities I am very active. I am quite active in both music and dance, am an accomplished competitive curler and hold my private pilots license to name only a few activities.
