Derek Davis serves as the Senior Vice Chancellor and General Counsel of the Office of Legal Affairs for The City University of New York (CUNY).The CUNY Office of General Counsel is CUNY’s system-wide resource for legal advice and representation. The Office of General Counsel assists CUNY’s leadership and stakeholders in advancing the University’s educational mission by providing expert, relevant and timely legal advice, guidance and advocacy. As General Counsel, Mr. Davis reports to CUNY’s Chairperson of the Board of Trustees and Chancellor. The General Counsel also serves as the Chief Ethics Officer of the University. The Office of General Counsel and Legal Affairs provides legal assistance and advice to the Board of Trustees, the University’s Central Office and CUNY’s 24 constituent schools and colleges.Mr. Davis earned two degrees from Boston University; a Bachelor of Arts degree, magna cum laude, in 1986 from the College of Arts and Sciences and a Juris Doctorate from the School of Law in 1989. Prior to joining CUNY, Mr. Davis served as the Executive Director of the Harvard Law School Center on the Legal Profession. Mr. Davis, who began practicing law in 1989, served a business attorney, counseling clients a broad spectrum of corporate transactional matters, including venture capital financings, private placements of securities, mergers and acquisitions, public project finance, and other corporate transactions for a variety of industries. His practice also involved counseling individuals and entities in corporate and public policy related matters involving non-profit institutions and institutions of higher education. During his twenty-three years in the practice of law, Mr. Davis practiced at the law firms Foley Hoag, LLP, Goldstein & Manello, LLP, Nutter McClennen & Fish, LLP, Peabody & Arnold, LLP and Greenberg Traurig, LLP. Throughout his legal career, Mr. Davis has been an active member of the Greater Boston community, with a record of past service on a number of boards, including the Board of Trustees of the USS Constitution Museum, the Corporation of the Perkins School for the Blind, the Corporation of Milton Hospital and the Board of Directors of Greater Boston Legal Services. Mr. Davis served as a member of the Board of Overseers of Boston University for 11 years. Mr Davis also served as a member of the Board of Trustees of Cambridge College for 12 years, 6 years of which as as Chairman of the Board.Mr. Davis remains actively engaged in state and national politics, and in various public policy issues.
