About Derek Denhartigh
I've always had a serious curious streak and so have been drawn particularly to science - literally the study of knowledge, scire in Latin meaning 'to know'. Not only was I curious, but I had the aptitude to learn and was the kid who asked the 'but why' questions ad infinitum until either the teacher's patience or knowledge was exhausted. It wasn't until late in my undergrad, specifically biochemistry, where the various disciplines I had studied finally started to come together and I could get answers to my questions at the molecular level. I loved learning and tutoring and thought that perhaps teaching would be a good fit for me, so I joined the Woodrow Wilson Teaching Fellowship. Unfortunately after obtaining certification, completing a year long student teaching internship, and having taught secondary Biology on my own, I discovered that I couldn't strike a satisfactory life/work balance that would allow me to excel at both. After teaching I worked in environmental laboratories for several years where I gained significant semi-volatile extraction knowledge, industry specific knowledge, and generalized experience in servant leadership, morale boosting, effective communication, self-motivation, etc. While lab work allowed for more work/life balance I found myself desiring more of a mental challenge and began looking into coding via freecodecamp.org. With FCC I was able to get my feet wet with HTML, CSS, and JS, but to further my learning I have enrolled in a full time, after hours, front end, web development bootcamp with Grand Circus where I’m expanding my learning to also include TDD, jQuery, nodeJS, AngularJS, and am looking forward to transitioning into the tech industry shortly. I’ve also been considering considering some C# learning between assignments and side projects. In addition to coding, my wife and I are also wedding photographers which is amazing!
