Sometimes audibles were required to complete the task at hand, especially after getting stuck in those wet spots of the field while picking stones! All jokes aside my parents both grew up on a farm and their parents ingrained in them the strongest core values to which they passed on to me. The farm life taught me all of the operating and mechanical skills a young man could ever ask for.. however it was the values and not the skills that have carried me through life. I am who I am today because of the invaluable life experience that growing up on a farm afforded to me and I will always have all the respect in the world for my parents and the other hardworking farmers and families that put food on our table. After graduating high school I chose to play hockey full time and moved to Yorkton, Saskatchewan to play Jr.A hockey and live with a billeted family and roommates/teammates. This was a great experience for me that provided lifelong memories and friends. It was also close (45 min) to my hometown so at the beginning of each season I could drive home and help the family finish harvest in August/September. It also allowed my parents the opportunity to watch almost every game, they were very supportive. I played hockey in Yorkton for three years and further developed as an adult and as a leader. It allowed me the opportunity to play a game that I loved at a higher level, while taking the time to reflect on what the next chapter of my life would bring. The highlight of my Jr hockey career was playing on the same team as my brother Brett Derkach. In my last year with the team I was awarded the "Unsung Hero" award. Show less

Moved to Tisdale, Saskatchewan when I was 17 years old to play Midget AAA hockey while billeting with a family and attending Grade 12. This was a new and exciting experience for me and was a goal that I worked very hard to achieve. Not only did Tisdale further shape me into who I am today, it really helped me take my hockey career to the next level and gave me confidence to push forward. I loved every minute of it! That year we hosted the Regional Championship in April 2006 where we lost in the finals, afterwards I was proud to receive the "Most Dedicated Player" award before moving back home to graduate from Ituna.
