  • City Of Fort Bragg, Ca
    Planning Commissioner; Board Chair
City Of Fort Bragg, Ca Aug 2010 - Jan 2017
    Fort Bragg Ca
My appointment was up in January 2017, it's been an honor to serve my community.Elected Board Chair at our March 14, 2012 meeting. As the Community Development mission statement says, myself along with my fellow commissioners main focus was to interpret the Coastal Plan and City General Plan in order to maintain and enhance Fort Bragg as a sustainable working town, and to keep a small town atmosphere with a high standard of living, and to be on the forefront of developing sustainable/renewable housing, food, transportation, and energy solutions for our myriad of issues.Fort Bragg is one of the only towns in CA that has the opportunity to nearly double it's size, due to the former Georgia Pacific Mill Site becoming available for Development (over the next 30 to 50 years), so this was a quite an exciting time to be involved in the long range planning of Fort Bragg.
  • Kzyx
    Producer Of: Iridium
    Kzyx 2005 - Sep 2016
    Mendocino County Ca
Sadly, I had to move on from KZYX, but I miss my audience, they were great!I produced Iridium as Delta 9, monthly since October 2012, when the shows originators, Kitty & the Creek decided to retire and leave it to me.Due to listener feed-back I changed the format a bit, featuring more solo piano, harp, guitar, new age, during the first hour and more spacey, ambient, chilled electronica, down-tempo, the second hour. I featured 70% new music and called it relaxing stargazing music one can dance to.
  • Kzyx Fm
Producer Of: Music Out Of Bounds
    Kzyx Fm Oct 2003 - Sep 2016
    Mendocino County Ca
Unfortunately, I had to move on from KZYX, it was a great run, and my long time listeners were fantastic, love you all!Music Out of Bounds (MOoB); Producer, Programmer, Board Operator.Music Out of Bounds hosted by Mister X, was on the air every other Friday night from Midnight until 3 AM, alternating with Sonic Attack (hosted by DJ Mike Stephens).MOoB covered many different musical genera, but I have real interest in 80's-current Eastern Bloc Nations "underground" music; 60's-current prog rock; 70's-80's punk, new wave, pop; 60's-current space, down-tempo, Lo-fi, chilled electronica, progressive house, trip-hop and such.Although I didn't feature it much on MOoB, I absolutely adore old school Reggae, rock steady, roots and DUB, especially Dub, and I have quite an extensive collection that I air occasionally when I sat-in as Derek Dubwise on other KZYX Reggae shows, like The Sounds of Zion (Papa Jon), or The Heavyweight Sound (DJ Larry Hacken).Additionally, for 6 years, as Les Coherent, I sat in on a regular basis on Cardboard Prison Radio, a talk/music show, usually hosted by Tim Gregory, Wednesday's from Midnight to 2 AM, it was a great show to host, and I'd sometimes have up to 18 callers during the 2 hour shift.I also used to sit in on several other music specialty shows on an as needed basis from our Mendocino Studio, so my voice could be heard with other names like: Mixxter D; The Rockin' D; Element 105; Mixxter X; and more.
  • Kzyx Fm
    Studio Engineer
    Kzyx Fm Oct 2003 - Aug 2013
    Mendocino, Ca
As Studio Engineer I was responsible for the audio/ISDN chain and all the studio audio equipment, computer, as well as general maintenance.I also trained/retrained many programmers on proper use of the On-air studio and equipment, and as of 2010 I'm only engineering on-air programming.About 2008 I started as a regular guest host on Cardboard Prison Radio, a 2 hour Call-In Talk/Music show on Wednesday nights from Midnight until 2 AM. I started using "Derek, just Derek", but since 2011, I've been using the name, Les Coherent.I'm also the regular studio engineer since December 2012, for Cherie Christiansen, a host of The Farm & Garden Show.During the Sierra Nevada World Music Festival of 2010, in Boonville, CA. I recorded most every live band at the Village stage, and the first bands of the day at the Valley stage, and ran the on-air booth, and I also provided other technical support, and some on-air commentary, and I interviewed an artist, and broke down and set up all the KZYX equipment for all three days.During the Sierra Nevada World Music Festival of 2009, in Boonville, CA. I, along with two other KZYX programmers, recorded most every live band at both stages, and ran the on-air booth, and I also provided other technical support, and some on-air commentary, and I interviewed two bands, and helped break down and move all the equipment for all three days.In 2005, within a 12 hour period, I disassembled and moved our Mendocino studio to another location in town, and set it up again in a different configuration (including building a new temp equipment console).

    Chairperson, Secratary, Meeting Facilitator
Mendocino Coast Woody Biomass Collaborative Jun 2012 - Sep 2015
    Fort Bragg, Ca
A diverse group consisting of the general public, foresters, timber company company representatives, environmentalists, government officials, and more, who are dedicated to bringing a Bio-mass Power Plant, and build an Eco-Industrial Park, in the Fort Bragg area. This area has enough renewable bio-mass to power a 30 MW power plant, and/or to produce Bio-fuel in large amounts, we have a site identified, have conducted fuel supply studies, made verbal agreements with the timber companies to provide their bio-mass, and all we need are the investors to make this a reality.I now know a great deal about bio-mass, and have toured several bio-mass power plants in our bio-region, unfortunately, I had to step down as Chair in 2015 due to other commitments, but I'm still involved peripherally with the group.
  • Big Brothers Big Sisters Mendocino County
    Interim Executive Director
Big Brothers Big Sisters Mendocino County Feb 2012 - Jan 2014
Sadly, due to our depressed economy, the Big Brothers Big Sisters Mendocino County Board of Directors had no choice but to vote to cease youth mentoring services and close our doors, on Dec. 31st, 2011, after 38 years of serving Mendocino County youth in need. I was deeply saddened by this, but today's political and financial climates dictate what social groups survive and which won't, so we lost out to a society that fails to see the long term value of investing in our youth.I have experience in starting 2 non-profits, but here my duties were quite different as I was closing down a non-profit, dealing with a dwindling staff, and selling our house/offices in Fort Bragg, which meant plenty of loose ends needed to be tied up as neatly as possible before the final swan song and then I'd be available for another position somewhere. One positive note is that the proceeds from the sale of our house will be donated to another local non profit to continue youth mentoring services on the Mendocino Coast.

  • Kmfb, Fm
    Programmer/Engineer
    Kmfb, Fm Nov 2000 - Nov 2011
I started at KMFB doing engineering duties during holidays, that I started sitting in for Sister Yasmin, on Roots Revelation, a Reggae/World Music show, I guest hosted as Derek Dubwise until the show ended in 2008.I was also sitting in for K.C., on I Hear You Rockin', a Rock music show, I guest hosted as The Rockin' D until the show ended.Much later I started sitting in for Late Night Liz on on B-Side Herself (I said "B-Side Himself), an eclectic music show, I guest hosted until Liz started to voice track her show in 2009. I also sat in for DJ Larry Hacken, on The Heavyweight Sound, a vintage/"old school" Reggae show as Derek Dubwise, DJ Larry liked my old school mix live.As of 04/2010 I no longer do occasional technical work there, and as of 11/01/11 KMFB sold and most of the programmers have been "surplussed", the call sign has changed to KUNK along with the format. R.I.P. KMFB FM, one of the best small market commercial radio stations ever.
  • Fort Bragg-Mendocino Coast Historical Society
    Board Member
Fort Bragg-Mendocino Coast Historical Society Mar 2007 - Dec 2010
    Fort Bragg Ca
My main focus was to bring the Guest House Museum which the FBMCHS rents from the City of Fort Bragg, back to "Life" as a viable educational, yet entertaining destination for our local Community, in order to attract younger generations to carry on when we have to move on.My secondary focus was to Promote the saving of Current/Recent Past Family History which often goes undocumented and is lost when the family elder passes on.The Society was recently (01-11) donated a 100 year old Rug Loom, and I started a collaboration with the Mendocino Weavers Guild/Pacific Textile Arts to have Volunteers come in during Visiting hours and Weave a Rag Rug's on the Loom much to the tourists delight.I was a Volunteer Docent at the Museum from 2003 until 12/10, and I also led evening Downtown History Walks every month on the First Saturday since 2008.I also helped to clean the inside of the Museum and perform small repairs, etc., on an as needed basis.

  • Kfjc Fm
    Programmer/Producer/Engineer
    Kfjc Fm 1984 - 1987
Upon my return to KFJC I became the de facto Production Director, even though my title was Asst. P.D., because I was doing all the work producing the "Bulletin Board", "Concert Outlook", and the IPSA's, because the regular P.D., Paul Luchter, was deeply involved in other things at the time. During this time I also produced/engineered a team show, Fun with Dick and Jane, co-hosting with Diana Rupp. We started out doing Graveyard shifts, but soon the Program Director moved us to Thursday morning drive time (6-10 AM), unfortunately, that show ended when Diana had work commitments, but I also produced a couple of different late night radio shows as well.I also "sat in" on several other radio shows during this time, such as The Gateway to Infinity, where I was a regularly sitting-in as Delta 9 when regular host Lou York was out of town, and twice I was lucky to sit-in on Jah's Music, Spliff Skankin's show, I used Derek Dubwise as my name.I participated in another new studio build out along with our Chief Engineer, Ken Grant (R.I.P.), and Marty Preece, during this second time at KFJC, and was honored by the engineering staff to be the first programmer to use it on the air during my show.I also provided quite a bit of technical support during the KFJC sponsored, I.C.B.S. convention in 1984, where Frank Zappa was to be our keynote speaker. We had to set up a Studio to Transmitter Link (STL) to the Hotel Saint Clair in downtown San Jose from our transmitter site, high atop Black Mountain, so I climbed our transmitter tower to mount and aim, a 5 GHz remote STL dish, what a view from there!
  • Kfjc Fm

    Kfjc Fm 1980 - 1983
    Los Altos Hills Ca
I started at KFJC in the News department, and became the News Director my very first day when the previous Director took a job in TV, unfortunately I was the only one in the department.I soon joined the engineering department as well, from there I became an on-air programmer, and producer of a late Thursday night show (2-6 AM), and also of my Friday, 6-10 PM, Mike Steele Show.I also participated in a new production studio build out with both of our Engineers, and I helped out on many station events.
