Derek is a Project Management Professional with the PMI, and has worked on a variety of projects in the field of transportation and project management. He has conducted numerous traffic impact assessments and traffic safety analysis. He has worked as manager of the Transport Operation Centre for the 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup in Port Elizabeth. He was project leader for Aurecon as the programme managers in setting up the Integrated Public Transport System for the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropole. He is also part of the team that conducts regular audits of the toll plazas on the N3 route. He has also conducted several studies in the field of traffic and transportation, such as an analysis of the top ten accident intersections in and around Port Elizabeth, and a study into the overloading of heavy vehicles in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan area.Derek was recently the project leader for Aurecon appointed by the Coega Development Corporation to conduct a road cost recovery study / model to set up a plan whereby Coega could recover the cost of maintaining their internal roads due to excessive wear and tear caused by especially heavy vehicles.Derek has also been involved in the project management of various non transport projects. Recently Derek has been the project manager of a Bulk Water upgrade project for the town of Fort Beaufort. This included the planning and roll-out of the various parts of the projects form surveys, water extraction, pipelines, reservoirs and pump stations, including water use licenses and environmental issues.Derek has recently also become involved in Access Audits. He is driving an Aurecon initiative to develop guidelines, checklists and reporting structures to audit buildings, infrastructure, public transport systems, etc to ensure maximum accessibility for all members of society, whether it is the infirm and elderly, the disabled or otherwise physically challenged.
