Phd Candidate
CurrentThesis: Design and Optimization of a Novel Ramjet Intake System to Extend the Operating Envelope of a Ramjet- Supervised the numerical analysis of a groundbreaking ramjet engine, which included research efforts, analytical evaluations (compressible flow, reactions, combustion, etc.), and the mentorship of young engineers involved in the project.- Developed three specialized one-dimensional, two-component high-speed compressible flow modelling tools using Matlab and Python to evaluate an aerospace engine intake system. Utilized the one-dimensional code for parametric analysis and optimization of the aircraft engine.- Modified a genetic algorithm code to complete optimization studies which analyzed approximately 1,000,000 designs for a given flight design point.- Collaborated with a colleague to apply the findings from the optimization analysis in the development of a ground-based prototype for testing purposes.- Performed two-dimensional and three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics simulations of high-speed compressible flows in both confined and free jet configurations, as well as ejectors, utilizing Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations.- Developed a new thermodynamic model for analysis of ejector-ramjet intakes.- Presented results of work at 3 American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics conferences.- Provided supervision and mentorship to a group of up to 20 young engineers and students, assisting them with general engineering and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis challenges, while also preparing grant proposals.- Provided support to fellow laboratory members in conducting aircraft flight simulations, performing combustion simulations, and analyzing aircraft stability.- Engaged in collaborative meetings to evaluate all laboratory project outcomes and provide recommendations for the optimal direction of future projects.
R&D Engineer & Team Manager
- Supervised a team of up to five engineers and technicians, as the design team lead and project manager, offering extensive knowledge in product development and machine design. This role involved various tasks such as conceptualizing designs, executing design reviews, conducting engineering analyses, producing 3D CAD models, generating drawing packages, collaborating with machine shops, managing project timelines, and overseeing the assembly and testing of prototypes.- Developed proposals, estimates, and invoices for various projects. Engaged with clients concerning project timelines, expenses, and design specifications.- Conducted simulations utilizing Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), Finite Element Analysis (FEA), and Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI), which included sophisticated models necessitating custom coding.- Oversaw the research, development, and design of a novel valve for polymer flood extraction technologies, which secured manufacturing contracts valued at over $1 million each year.- In the capacity of design and project manager, led the development and prototyping of a novel comminution machine for cement, estimated to be worth around $600,000, which constituted approximately 12% of the company's revenue. The project involved comprehensive computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis of the rotor's flow path with particulates, rotordynamic analysis of the rotating elements, and finite element analysis (FEA) of critical components. The testing of the prototype successfully produced cement with a particle size of 5 to 20 microns.- Directed the design initiative for the development of advanced cooling fins for thermoelectric generators (TEGs). This included a comprehensive analysis of combustion and air/fuel mixing within the TEG combustion chamber. The design was successfully completed and incorporated into the Global Power Technologies S-8500 TEG.
Fluid And Acoustic Specialist
- Senior fluid flow and acoustic specialist responsible for performing acoustical, torsional and pipe flexibility / stress analyses and training junior engineers.- Senior Engineer on a project for the US Department of Justice to help determine the cause and environmental impact of the Deepwater Horizon failure. In conjunction with a Metallurgical Specialist, conducted on site analysis of the BOP in New Orleans to determine cause of erosion in the BOP.- Recreated BOP and well models from scan data and photographic evidence. - Conducted research into alternative pulsation suppression devices. Acted as support for IT personnel. Advised on plans for server / cluster configuration.
Machine Science Engineer
- Primary fluid dynamics specialist; supported junior and senior engineers with simulations, designs and drawing packages.- Performed numerical fluid flow and stress analysis, built CAD solid models, examined analysis results to conduct design improvements or recommend design changes.- Completed 4-month Fluid Structure Interaction project on an adsorber tower to determine thermally induced stress; developed new technical skills and procedures not formally known or utilized within the organization. As a result, the client was able to modify the tower to reduce failure occurrences.
Research Engineer
- Designed the research methodology and numerical models for a Pratt & Whitney-sponsored study to evaluate the specific flow properties of a high-pressure turbine with different rotor blade counts and blade scaling.- Established the framework for a research and simulation methodology to be continued over the following three years; utilized Gambit to generate the turbine geometry and mesh.- Required conducting computer simulations with the CFD software Fluent on a high-pressure turbine stage with compressible flow.- Analyzed results with a focus on unsteady turbine performance with coding in Matlab and Tecplot.
