The North East Forestry Group was formed with the support of Teagasc in May 2013. It is open to forest owners in Cavan, Louth, Meath and Monaghan. Currently there are 37,360 hectares with 930 forest owners in the above counties. The county breakdown is as follows:16,830 hectares in Cavan with 462 forest owners;2,430 hectares in Louth with 45 forest owners;12,500 hectares in Meath with 259 forest owners; 5,600 hectares in Monaghan with 164 forest owners.The purpose of this Group, is to gather forest owners who are interested in maximising their forest’s potential return and, with the help of Teagasc, there can be a number of benefits:Gathering clusters of similar aged plantations, to get economies of scale in harvesting and seller of timber.Running various courses (e.g. chainsaw and first aid).Forest producers can pool knowledge of contractors and thinning procedures to achieve best return from their forests.The North East Forestry Group provides a number of field days and events, with expert speakers on various forest activities.We welcome all sizes and categories of forest and forest owners from the novice to the experienced.The North East Forestry Group are one of the only private owner groups in Ireland to achieve FSC Certification.We have run very successful Knowledge Transfer Groups (KTG) where forest owners were paid to attend various workshops and field days to expand their knowledge and learn best practices in managing their forest.

Extern Group is made up a number of companies working on the island of Ireland in the charity sector. Cavan Monaghan Rural Development has been in operation since 1991 and has drawn down almost £7million for the region under the LEADERI and LEADERII programmes. When combined with additional investment from private sources this represents a total investment into rural areas of over £15million.Under the last round of LEADER the Co-op secured €4.96million (£3.9million) through the National Rural Development Programme (NRDP) 2001-2006. The programme is funded by the Irish Government under the National Development Plan and the European Union under structural funds.The main aim of the programme was to encourage and help rural individuals and groups to think about the longer-term potential of their area.
