The Environment and Sustainability Group (previously Environment Policy Group) aims to be increasingly proactive, looking at those elements that impact upon ports from an environment and sustainability perspective. The topics have ranged from energy legislation and taxation to dredging, interactions with regulators, land and marine aspects.

Building on my previous appointments, this position (re-title) brings increased recognition of the ESG elements, investor interactions, cultural change, environmental strategy and regulation aspects; both shaping and implementing. Whilst also working on infrastructure upgrade consents and consenting strategies for current and prospective tenants.

Part of the Senior Leadership Team, heading up Health, Safety, Environment and Energy aspects across the Forth Ports Group; directing and managing the team across these functions. Senior Manager responsible for all environmental and energy aspects for the Forth Ports Group of companies: Scottish Ports, Marine, Port of Tilbury London, Property (including Ocean Terminal Shopping Centre until sold in 2012), Nordic Group (including waste collection services, recycling and treatment until sold in 2014) and Forth Energy. The production and approval of the first two Ofgem approved charging methodologies for private electricity networks and Charing the inaugural industry body examining the issue of third party access to private electricity networks - driving change in the electricity industry to deliver the legislative requirements needed to facilitate Ofgem approval for the network charging methodologies.This role has required considerable focus on energy efficiency, EIA completion, implementing ISO50001 across the group, regulatory changes in both environmental and energy remits, overseeing and managing public inquiry witnesses, discussions with regulators and developers across a variety of industries. Preparation of and coordination for Public Inquiries has at times been a significant proportion of the workload; including witness selection and guidance, working with and advising the legal team, attending, coordinating and reporting on proceedings.I represent Forth Ports on the Forth Estuary Forum, Tay Estuary Forum, Forth and Tay River Basin Management Planning Groups & Flood Fora, the UK Imports Task Force and UKMPG (UK Major Ports Group) & BPA (British Ports Association) Environment Policy Group. I represent the UKMPG on the Marine Strategy Forum (Scotland) and Scottish National Flood Management Forum. Historically I have represented UKMPG on discussions regarding energy regulations such as CRC and third party access to electricity networks and industry related Permitting issues with the Environment Agency.

Scoped the options for renewable energy generation on site, undertook due diligence on prospective Joint Venture Partners, choosing SSE plc. Oversaw EIAs, Habitat Regulations Assessments and associated environmental aspects for the various renewable energy projects as they progressed towards and ultimately achieved Section 36 Energy Act Consents. Engaged with all relevant environmental regulators through the consenting process: SNH, SEPA, Historic Scotland, Local Authorities, Forestry Commission and more. Expert witness at public inquiry on marine and tidal aspects. Seconded from Forth Ports and remained in-role at Forth Ports at the same time.

Responsible for all environmental issues in the Scottish Operations (Ports, Marine and Property Departments and Forth Energy). Increased focus on the environmental aspects of property and energy development applications, and assessing options for Nordic Waste Management. Devised and Implemented ISO14001 systems for the Marine Department in Scotland and Operations Department at the Port of Grangemouth. Lead auditor for the ISO14001 systems. Considerable effort has been deployed on shaping and subsequently implementing the Carbon Reduction Commitment and third party access to electricity networks, much of this effort was spent with politicians and civil servants working to shape and subsequently change the legislation, both initially and at the 'simplification' stage.

Responsible for all environmental and counter terrorist security issues in the Scottish Ports and Marine Divisions. This included the creation of security plans (and their subsequent approval by Government Agencies), tendering and procuring CCTV and access control systems (working with the Purchasing and IT Departments), appointment of a firm to supply security officers and the installation of significant infrastructure to deliver security requirements and safety benefits, within a tight timescale for delivery. This involved a considerable amount of discussion with staff and site tenants and visitors; requiring education and negotiation.

Provision of environmental advice to the Port of Leith and Marine functions. A significant amount of Auditing and Benchmarking at this stage also.

CoastNet was established in 1996, was a national charity dedicated to sustainable development of the UK’s coasts. CoastNET ceased trading in 2012. Trustee 2001-2006 and Director from 2004-2006.

Taught the Coastal Processes and Management Course as an external lecturer to post graduate students in the then Graduate School of Environmental Studies. Supervised a number of Masters Students where their Dissertations related to the coastal environment, and management of or near the coast.

Research and teaching post graduate students in the Graduate School of Environmental Studies and provision of environmental advice to Forth Ports PLC on secondment.

Provision of occasional lectures to Marine Studies students.

Provided science, advice and research support to the private and public sectors on coastal, lakeshore and fluvial geomorphology, alongside management, socio-economics and law from a coastal perspective. Clients included the EU, Canada Aid, Scottish Executive and larger consulting firms.
