When I left school I spent two years in the Royal Air Force where I was commissioned as a Pilot Officer in the Equipment Branch. This provided me with much valuable organisational, supervisory and administrative experience. I was then admitted to Selwyn College, Cambridge, to read for an Honours Degree in Natural Science. After graduation I joined the Chemical Industry as a Research Chemist. I then moved on to become Chief Chemist and Technical Director of a company manufacturing fertilizers and crop protection products. I was also a specialist advisor to the Fertilizer Industry, the British Standards Institution and the International Standards Organisation. I hold professional fellowships of the Royal Society of Chemistry and the Institute of Risk Management..I have been very active as a researcher in the field of social and economic history emphasising genealogical, biographical and technological topics. I have held office in several local, national and international societies. I have published several papers, reviews,essays and a dissertation for the degree of MPhil. I have also contributed to several books and booklets and edited a number of other publications. I have been invited to lecture on a wide range of topics and to run extra-mural courses for Cambridge University and the WEA. I often lecture to local, national and international societies on topics in those fields in which I am an active researcher. I have been elected to Fellowships by the Royal Historical Society, the Society of Genealogists and the College of Teachers.I am currently President of the Guild of One-Name Studies, President of Doncaster and District Family History Society, Patron of Suffolk Family History Society, Vice President of Cambridge University Heraldic and Genealogical Society, and Vice President of the Federation of Family History Societies.
