Having spent just under 2 yrs in the bustling ports of Richards Bay & Durban; I was privileged to perform upwards of 620+ surveys during my tenure with Unimar Marine; the surveys performed ranged from routine to complex in nature.I resigned my position in order to gain more experience in project management & consultative surveys under the DB Marine flag.

Aligned with my future goals and growth I have been very fortunate to join the team at Unimar Marine. I am now actively engaged on a daily basis with many varied surveys ranging from routine to complex in nature, and absolutely loving it.

Having completed my marine surveying apprenticeship I cemented my career with an Advanced Diploma in Marine Surveying (Distinction Cargo Surveying with further Accreditation in Draught Surveying). I've always had a fascination with Marine Surveyors and the work they do. They would seemingly make sound decisions based on little or incomplete data and this made me very curious about this type of career. After some lengthy discussions with several surveyors I decided that THIS was the career of my dreams.I was fortunate enough then to enter into an apprenticeship under the guidance of a very well respected Marine Surveyor, who is a Master Mariner with 30+yrs of shore based surveying experience. I was taught the 'old-school' way, where a surveyor needs to be meticulous to the tee and not to take any short cuts whatsoever. I learned how to properly deal with irate & argumentative Chief Engineers when performing bunker surveys; how to properly investigate vessel condition, what to look out for etc., basically, the nuances that one cannot learn from books alone.

Chairman, Saldanha Chapter – South African Association of Ship Operators and Agents 2017-18• Overall responsibility for all branch activities in Saldanha & Namibia.• Full branch administration duties.• Monitoring & curtailing of operating expenses related to branch activities.• Maintaining positive relations with industry in general to uphold service provider goodwill.• Attending onboard vessels in port to monitor staff performance to ensure standards are maintained.• Scrutinizing of vessel SOF & related documentation by operations to ensure accuracy.• Ensuring branch procedures, policies are in line with company standard.• Implementation and promoting of local & off-shore marketing initiatives. • Mapping of freight- & vessel movement.• To relay any sales leads / information which may be of benefit to the company.• Close monitoring of vessel DA accounting turn-around times in line with KPI’s.

Fortunate enough to handle various vessel types in Richards Bay, I enjoyed my 8 month stay in this port. From Richards Bay I also assisted Durban operations from time to time which also gave me a unique appreciation for our busiest port. Eventually returned to Saldanha Bay to continue ships operations.

Having started my ships agency journey in my home port of Cape Town I was initially based in the Saldanha Bay office with Global Portside Services. After 6 months the work volume in Cape Town necessitated opening a office located on the foreshore. I was fortunate enough to be placed in that position and from an early start operated as sole agent in Cape Town for our various breakbulk, bunker vessels. With the merger between GPS and Barwil circa 2006 the Saldanha office was understaffed as such I moved back to support operations.
