Left school at age of 17 years to work in architects office in Cornwall. Studied on day release at Cornwall Technical College, awarded Silver Medal and obtained Inter RIBA IN 1961. Moved to London working for large Practices gaining vast experience and becoming senior assistant project managing jobs for major national and international companies, including CAV, lUCAS , National Coal Board, CERL, Boots, Tesco and large Developers in London and throughout the U.K. at the same time Derek continued his studies obtaining membership of the R.I.B.A.,1968, and being highly commended for his Design Thesis.Work included residential developments, luxury and social housing, large scale developments in town centres, including conservation areas, commercial offices, retail developments, factories and warehouses, laboratories, etc. Derek's role included development design through to project management and cost control.This vast experience in design, project and cost management gave the foundation to establish his practice in Gravesend in Kent in 1972. It was not long before the practice was appointed as architects for Bowater Scott to design and project manage the first Deinking Plant in Western Europe, in Barrow in Furness,together with extensive building projects to the Tissue Mill in Northfleet....and so the practice grew..In 2001 Derek's wife Jennifer suddenly and unexpected died. In 2002 Derek moved to Southamptonwhere he met Alma, who's husband Costa had died some years before at the age of 54.Alma and Costa, had lived in Kent and were friends of Jennifer and Derek.Derek continued to practice as a Consulting Architect, and continues to keep in contact with long lasting clients in Kent as well as Hampshire.www.derekphillipsarchitect.co.uk
