About Derek Rinks

I am a life-long learner, a jack of many trades, and my personal tag line would be “I play a long game." A long game requires commitment, patience, a joy for the game, and the ability to strategize several moves ahead while staying fully aware and fully engaged in the present moment. To that end, I have become a self-declared educational architect, and I have spent the last few years working to redesign the landscape of high school education. Education in today’s digital world must move beyond the present focus of simply memorizing facts, and move into a world of mastery learning environments, a healthier school-life balance, and an academic framework that gives the freedom to truly pursue passions. In this same spirit of work-life balance and mastery learning environments, two years ago we sold it all to purchase a catamaran and sail with our kids around the US and Caribbean. We chose a life full of experiences and exploration to give our kids a hands-on education out in the big, wild world beyond suburbia.We have returned home stronger, better versions of ourselves. More resilient, connected, and intentional to work hard and play hard together. I am seeking the next chapter in my career and will bring the best of what I have learned and overcome to whatever I do.
