About Derek Cox, Mba

When you get to the NFL, people say “You made it!” as if the work is done and you’re set for life. However, getting there is not the end; it’s the beginning. I thought I had it all in life once I was drafted in the 3rd round by the Jacksonville Jaguars. That was my sole dream, being an NFL player. It never dawned on me that even if I’d played past the age of 40 like Tom Brady, I’d still have 50+ years of life left to live. It didn’t hit home until my college coach said to me, “Do you know what the NFL stands for? ‘Not For Long.’’” That stunned me, I had never heard that before, but it quickly made me realize that I had no clue what I was going to do with my life when my football career was over. Players have one moment to be a professional athlete, and once that moment has passed, they don’t want to look back on it wishing they had managed their career better. I took advantage of the helpful resources provided by the NFL and the NFL Players Association. Opportunities such as an externship on Capitol Hill as well as programs at institutions such as Wharton School of Business were helpful, but I could have done a better job managing my career. If I could go back, there are things that I would do differently. I made mistakes that could have been avoided. The NFL should be a platform to expand a player’s brand and increase his ability to do more as a business and community leader. Yes, first focus on maximizing his performance on the field, but don’t lose sight of his performance off the field as well. An athlete can only perform at the elite level for so long. At some point he either retires or he gets fired. What will the athlete do when this happens to him? Will he be prepared? Will he navigate the transitions optimally? Will he become self-destructive? I’m here to serve. I want to lead these men to lives of peace and prosperity; lives of influence and impact. We get one life to live. Let’s use it to enhance the lives of others as well as our own.Football is a game, but life is not. There’s a life beyond the game that I want to guide players toward, a life of income, identity, purpose, and significance, which is all tied to their family, community, mental health, and post-career success. Reach out to me at dscoxx@gmail.com to schedule a time to discuss how I can be of service to you.Warm regards,Derek
