About Derek Samuelson
I entered into education in 2007 following a successful career as a swim coach, where I led several teams in the Ann Arbor and Saline communities and was awarded the MHSAA Region 6 Swim Coach of the Year award in 2006. Leaving full-time swim coaching was not easy, but I had a calling for education. In 2007, I took a position with Providence Hebrew Day School in Providence, RI, and in 2010 joined the staff of their sister school, the New England Academy of Torah. During my six years with these schools I was widely used and facilitated classes in 13 different subject areas in grades 5-11. During these years I also completed a M.Ed. in School Administration. In 2013, I changed schools and taught at Blackstone Valley Mayoral Academy (BVP) in Central Falls, RI where I was the founding 8th grade Social Studies teacher and also taught a technology class. During my first year with BVP I served as an administrative intern and in 2014 became the 8th grade chair. Also in 2014, I began a two year fellowship with the Highlander Institute (now Throughline Learning) and earned a Certificate in Blended and Personalized Learning Instructional Coaching from Roger Williams University. In 2016, I relocated back to Michigan and began working for Pontiac High School as a Social Studies Teacher. While in Pontiac I helped coordinate the school's WIN program and served on district team to redesign the PLC process at the secondary level. I left Pontiac in 2018 to teach at Berkley High School where I could be a part of my home district and serve my neighbors and friends. I loved my time in Berkley where I threw myself into a full implementation of the "flipped' model for learning and choice-based learning/assessment. In Berkley, I also create and facilitated the "Social Justice Book Club" which aligned to the building professional learning efforts but offered an opportunity for interested staff to dig deeper. In 2022, I decided to take a step out of the classroom and become a full-time instructional coach with Clarenceville Schools. As an instructional coach I primarily support teachers in setting and achieving goals related to their tier-I instruction. In addition to this, I've created and led Wednesday professional learning twice a month, supported tier-II instruction, co-developed new class proposals, overseen department meetings, and co-developed several teacher led "choice day" professional learning opportunities. As a coach, the work that brings me the most joy and pride is when the teachers I support are excited and encouraged by the goals they've hit.
Listed skills include Curriculum Design, Curriculum Development, Teaching, Lesson Planning, and 12 others.
