About Derek Braun
I’m a long-time faculty member at Gallaudet University with a background in computer science and genetics. As one of the very few Deaf geneticists in the world, I’ve been interviewed and featured in “Scientists with disabilities: Access in all areas” in Nature, “Science in Sign Language” in ASBMB Today, and in All in the Mind, a radio show by Australian Broadcasting Corp, among others. I also presented at TEDxMidAtlantic 2013. I’ve done research in molecular genetics, population genetics, and cultural competency in mentoring of Deaf students in research experiences.Outside of being faculty, I’ve been rock climbing for ten years and work occasional weekends as a climbing instructor and guide and host local climbing events through Climb Deaf DC.I like spending time with my two children. Someday, I want to renovate a van and tour the hiking, camping, rock climbing, and skiing/snowboarding in this country. I’m also trying to make my home ecologically efficient, after having spent a few days at the Earthship development near Taos, NM.
