Our main focus is to test for lead and asbestos in various samples from buildings collected throughout NYC.-Lead testing includes air samples, total suspended particulate matter (TSP) samples, paint, soils and wipes. All of these are analyzed by either flame atomic absorption spectroscopy (FAAS) or inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS).-Asbestos testing includes bulk, vermiculite and air samples. These are analyzed by polarized light microscopy (PLM) and phase contrast microscopy (PCM). Transmission electron microscopy is utilized here if necessary.

Organic photochemistry lab research looking to understand singlet oxygen production through various mechanisms as this may apply to sensitizer drugs involved in delivering the singlet to a cancerous cell.

Research includes looking into the efficiency of organic photovoltaic (OPV) cells. Once the polymers are prepared, they are arranged into layers of films that serve as the layers of the photocell. The current density is then tested over extended periods of time, which will determine the stability of the polymer as it is exposed to sunlight.

“Partial Sulfonation of Polyaniline and Nanofibers” – Synthesis and characterization of polyaniline nanofibers and study of the extent of sulfonation achieved under a variety of conditions. This may improve the reproducibility of nanocomposites with metal nanoparticles with applications including sensors and other electronic devices. Instrumental techniques include scanning electron microscopy (Hitachi TM-3030) and FTIR spectroscopy.
