  • Christmas Bowl, Llc
    Chief Executive Officer
Christmas Bowl, Llc Jul 2009 - Apr 2015
Formed in 2009, The Los Angeles Christmas Bowl® was a newly proposed NCAA postseason bowl game based in Los Angeles, CA. The new bowl initiative was a vision since 2000, with NCAA applications submitted in 2010, 2011 & 2014.Chistmas Bowl Executive Committee:* Derek Dearwater - Co-Founder/CEO - Christmas Bowl* John Perles - Co-Founder/President - Christmas Bowl* George Perles - Legendary NFL & NCAA Coach and Founder/CEO Little Caesar’s Pizza Bowl* Todd Alles - Former Director of Football Operations at Ohio State University & University of AlabamaThe Christmas Bowl promised to become the most benevolent bowl game in the postseason with its exclusive alignment with Children's Miracle Network Hospitals. The bowl was also supported by Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, as well as a number of corporate sponsors. The economic impact on the City of LA was estimated beyond $25 million. The changing landscape of the NCAA proved to be a challenge for all new bowl applications during the time of the Christmas Bowl's applications; nevertheless, the new bowl maintained its resolve to achieve NCAA Certification. In its 1st attempt in for certification in 2010 the PAC-10 & WAC AD's voted unanimously to align with the Christmas Bowl; however, the NCAA failed to certify the new bowl, since a required "back-up" agreement from a 3rd conference wasn't available to support the PAC-10 #7 selection which was eligible 60% of the time. In 2014, the proposed bowl secured the support of the Mountain West Conference with one of its top 6 selections, providing the PAC-12 would support the bowl with their #8 selection, which was eligble for post season play 70% of the time. The PAC-12 elected to align its #8 selection to the ESPN owned bowls (ERT), rather than the Christmas Bowl. The LA Christmas Bowl may continue to seek NCAA certification in the coming years as anticipated conference expansion develops with the PAC-12 & Mountain West Conferences.
