Derek Denniston is CEO, President and Founder of Alta Power Group, a boutique advisory firm he founded in 2009 to provide clients with expert commercial advisory services on raising both equity and debt investment capital and transacting renewable power (energy, RECs, capacity and GHG-free attributes), energy storage and generation assets throughout the WECC. He has cultivated a deep international network of client and customer relationships, including project developers, generators, utilities, companies, marketers, lenders and private equity investors. Over his career, Derek has originated, structured and led successful negotiations for the purchase and sale of power for more than 24 GW of new power generation assets of all types and battery energy storage systems (BESS), collectively representing more than $50 Billion in invested capital (probably more than anyone else ever, but he freely admits that he is also not aware of any such tracking and ranked comparison!). At PG&E, he has led the successful negotiation of an unusually diverse range of innovative transactions—including:• EPC and Long-Term Performance and Maintenance Agreements LTPMA with Tesla for more than 200 MW of new BESS capacity; at the time of execution, Elkhorn was the world’s largest utility-owned Battery Energy Storage System (BESS).• Microgrid Islanding Services Agreement with Energy Vault for the first of its kind GHG-free hybrid hydrogen and BESS-powered microgrid, the world’s largest utility-scale, ultra-long duration energy storage project.• Microgrid Islanding Services Agreement for PG&E’s first microgrid islanding services agreement for the 46 MW Red Bluff CT power plant.• Over 4 GW of PPAs for RPS and GHG-free energy, Resource Adequacy (RA), and Renewable Energy Credits (RECs).Derek originated and led negotiations for Greengate Power for 3 PPAs with PG&E for purchase of 450 MW output from Alberta wind projects, and led successful lobbying effort to secure CPUC approval. He also originated and led negotiations for Idaho Wind Partners for 18-year PPA with Seattle City Light. This transmission-connected BESS addresses local capacity and reliability requirements and participates in the CAISO markets. When the contracts were executed, the Moss Landing Battery Energy Storage Project was the largest utility-owned battery energy storage system in the world. -
