About Derek Heitz
I'm an environmental scientist, mostly working for folks in heavy industry, manufacturing, timber processing, recycling, and solid waste. Largely working in uplands, and typically on stormwater projects (to put a pigeonhole within a pigeonhole). I've successfully managed projects with valuations of >$1,000,000 all the way down to <$0. I'm good at looking at spreadsheets, Gantt charts, and Outlook calendars. Lots of experience making things work. Also plenty of experience adapting when things don't end up working. Regardless of the situation, I'm good at communicating what's happening with empathy and in a language that you can understand. Big fan of networking, outreach, inclusion, and collaboration. Let me know how I can help. Also let me know how you can help me. There's a pretty good chance I want to donate some time and experience to your 501c3, education, or industry group if we share environmental interests.
Listed skills include Gis, Field Work, Geology, Arcgis, and 40 others.

Project Environmental Scientist
CurrentI currently spend a lot of time working with industrial clients on NPDES compliance and due diligence efforts. Much of my work includes compliance with existing permit standards; performance of pollutant source evaluation and control studies; identification and abatement of current and legacy contamination sources; bridging data gaps in prior due diligence efforts; development and performance of Phase I and II ESAs; and designing, installing, and maintaining treatment systems for stormwater, process water, and ex situ groundwater treatment. Daily operations are all over the place, but include:- General project management, budgeting, and scheduling associated with environmental projects- Coordination and communication with clients, regulators, subcontractors, and other interested parties- Historical document research associated with property acquisitions, due diligence, and allocation efforts- Development of training, reporting, and recordkeeping programs- General marketing and client satifsaction work
Regional Project Coordinator
I worked with clients and their environmental consultants/engineers to design, mobilize, and install specialized pump and treat water treatment systems. Most work focused on permanent system installations for treatment of stormwater runoff at industrial/commercial sites and long-term system rentals for treatment of contaminated groundwater. All treatment plants were custom designed to remediate site-specific pollutant loads, allowing projects to meet any NPDES or sewer discharge permit requirements. Daily operations included:- Performing site walks and evaluations with clients and their consultants/engineers- Overseeing all bench and pilot testing, coordinating with and overseeing CCS's treatability laboratory staff. Reviewing treatability testing results to determine feasible treatment train alternatives. - Coordinating with staff to design, build, and install selected treatment alternative(s). Drafting, updating, and revising all schedules as necessary- Ensuring client/consultant satisfaction throughout project and during any selected long-term Operations and Maintenance proceedings
Staff Scientist Ii
I acted as a staff environmental scientist for TIG, supporting our offices throughout the United States. Most projects and tasks were for clients and parties upstream of contaminated urban waterways.Daily operations included:- Performing field investigations, including capture and delivery of stormwater samples in a variety of environments- Determining pollutant pathways and assisting clients with source control and abatement tasks - Reviewing, analyzing, and interpreting sampling data collected by TIG and others- Drafting and editing of technical memoranda based on sampling and site analyses performed by TIG and others
Staff Scientist
I served as the lab supervisor, lead technical writer, and hydrologic modeler for the Pacific Northwest branches of CCS. I additionally served as a project coordinator for a majority of the Industrial Stormwater projects on the West Coast, as well as most of the Public Works projects for the Puget Sound Region. Most of my work focused on sediment and pollutant abatement in industrial stormwater runoff and dewatering water on remediation sites. Daily operations included:- Performing site walks and evaluations with clients at their industrial or construction facilities.- Determining treatment requirements for upcoming Public Works projects through analysis of Phase I/II ESA's, civil drawings, bench testing, or a combination of the three.- Bench and pilot testing to determine chemical solutions for site waters that fail to meet pollutant benchmarks. Pollutants commonly targeted and abated include TSS, turbidity, metals, organics, and B/COD- Modeling stormwater runoff volumes and determining necessary storage capacity and discharge flow rates for potential upcoming site bids.- Drafting treatability and site evaluation documents to summarize results.- Drafting and/or proofreading SWPPP documents, treatability plans, and O&M manuals for permanent treatment system installations and temporary system mobilizations.- Performing data acquisition and analysis tasks for upcoming projects, and transmitting summarized results to inside and outside sales staff.- Managing the Customer Resource Management (CRM) tool: Monitoring and tracking all projects, accounts, and contacts for current jobs, upcoming bids, and potential leads.
Teaching Assistant'S Assistant
This position functioned in conjunction with the below-mentioned Curriculum Development. I worked in a group of four to assist students during class projects and study sessions in a 200-level Earth Materials course. The focus of the in-class lecture periods was guiding and preparing students for lab times, helping them be ready for the higher involvement of the lab periods.
Curriculum Developer
I worked to improve/modernize departmental coursework. We utilized online lectures and quizzes, leaving in-class time for group work and hands-on learning. A three-step process of online lecture, followed by introductory hands-on, and finishing with a full lab period was created. The goal was to help students fully understand a complicated course in a way that is less overwhelming, and the technique remains in use.
Department Manager
I mostly operated on the sales floor, functioning as the soil and gardening expert at a highly regarded store. During my tenure, I received substantial training on soil science, health, replenishment, and sustainability. Additionally, I served as a purchaser for various departments, monitoring inventory flow, seasonal variations/fluctuations, merchandising, and shrinkage control.
