I have spent almost all of my working life specialising in laytime and demurrage. I began my career at BP Oil International Ltd, London, in 1989. I also worked at Trafigura Beheer BV and Engen Petroleum Ltd when I was living in London. It was while working for Engen that I moved to Cape Town in 1998. I subsequently worked as a consultant and have been employed by Calulo Shipping and Unical Shipping, as their demurrage manager. In 2010, I set-up and ran Cape Demurrage Solutions - a demurrage consultancy specialising in servicing the Calulo group of companies (traders, shipbrokers, coastal ship operators etc).Seeking greater diversity and recognising the need for a truly independent consultancy, I formed Aegis Maritime (Pty) Ltd (formerly Asdem Africa) in 2015. Specialising in all aspects of laytime and demurrage consulting, from advising on contract clauses to calculation & analysis of claims and hosting training courses, Aegis Maritime became the local “go-to” consultancy for all Laytime and Demurrage requirements. For family reasons, I moved back to Ireland at the end of 2022 and I now run Irwin Demurrage Consulting. This business is intended to operate as a virtual demurrage department for our clients, whereupon all aspects of the laytime and demurrage process are supervised; from the contract clauses all the way through to final settlement.I have presented demurrage training courses in Cape Town and Johannesburg since 2011, and I am a SETA-accredited facilitator.
