Derek Welle was born in Portland, Oregon where he attended Portland State University and earned a B.S. in Quantitative Economics. During his time as an undergraduate student he developed a passion for macroeconomics and a curiosity for international economies. In 2017, he attended the University of Cape Town (UCT) in South Africa. Derek completed a Masters of Economics by Coursework and Dissertation from UCT in 2018 specializing in econometric methods. His time spent at UCT allowed him to develop a deeper understanding of the global economy. Dereks education and background in economic theory, econometrics and predictive modeling lead him to begin a career in banking as a model developer.Derek has achieved over 5 years of experience in the banking industry developing predictive models (e.g. CECL, CCAR/DFAST, IRR, Liquidity, FTP, etc.) and now leads a team of Data Scientists. Since joining the industry he has witnessed how economic and social factors impact business risk and how behavioral insights can effect strategy and growth. Utilizing predictive modeling and analytics to make pertinent business decisions is a role that Derek takes pride in.
