Derek started his career in 1983 with IBM Canada as a systems and computer engineer, where he qualified as a registered patent agent in Canada and the United States in 1994. Derek has a thorough understanding of all aspects of intellectual property including patent application and prosecution, patent litigation, patent trolling, intellectual property policy and leadership of international intellectual property teams and strategy. Derek’s experience includes leadership positions with IBM Canada, Husky Injection Molding Systems and Bell Canada. Derek holds a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering degree with a major in systems and computer engineering from Carleton University and a Masters of Applied Science degree in technology innovation management from Carleton University where he also received a senate medal for outstanding academic achievement.
